This is our first article on how to's, as we go along doing some modifications on our car we will
be passing them along to you. Working on cars is not only practical, economical but it is also lots'
of fun.
This article is on how to make your own fresh air kit. I put it in my '93 Mustang. Its job is to
bring in cool air from the front of the engine to the air filter.
I've seen people removing the air box all together and putting in a free flow air filter, I believe
that especially in the summer when the engine gets hot, it will hurt performance.
Therefore, a bit of fresh air is the answer to the summer heat !
The Ford Mustang (possibly other brands/makes too) has a silencer box that quiets the rush of air
into the engine. That is reason to take it off already, but it also restricts the flow of air causing a
reduction of around 6 Hp.
- Remove the air filter box by taking the two bolts on the top of the box, then remove the air
silencer by taking out the three bolts that hold it in place. (you will be rewarded with a strangely
pleasing growl under acceleration and of course six more Hp ! )
- In your local hardware store you should be able to find a dryer exhaust kit. It should have a
flexible tube, brackets and a vent cover ( as showed)
- With the air pick up attached to the tube, install it from the bottom of the car. Leave enough
room for the tube to reach the opening of the air filter box. If you live in a dusty area it's not a
good idea to put it directly in front of the opening because it might overload the filer with dirt.
- Check to see if everything fits. If so, secure the tube by attaching a couple of wires from the
tube to the many wholes in the inner fender. The air pick up can be secured by making a little hole
and attaching it to the lower radiator "flap"
.
- If you replace the filter to a free flow air filter, you will be able to take advantage of the extra
flow of cooler air.
This is a simple modification that will give your engine a bit more air to breathe !
